How to create cool gel pads for just pennies

Upon completing your permanent makeup procedure provide your clients with a Cold Gel Pad, lay on their eyes or lips. Treat your clients special by providing them with this cool and soothing after care treatment to help reduce swelling, pain and redness created from having their permanent makeup procedure done.  Lay the Cool Gel Pads onto the client’s skin where the service was preformed.  Remain on skin  for 10 to 15 minutes.  Cool Gel Pads can also be used for tweezing, threading, laser treatments or any service where the skin is left slightly irritated 


Here is the EZ way to make your own Gel Pads

Recipe for Gel Eye Pads 
1) “Snack” size zip lock bags
2) Rubbing Alcohol (70%)
3) Tap Water
4) Food coloring if desired (you choice of color)

Take one Snack size zip lock bag.  Fill equal parts Rubbing Alcohol and Water 3/4 of the way up.   You can add a drop of food coloring if you want a pretty color, (maybe you want to customize the color to match your salon colors).  Zip the bag closed and freeze. (May use two bags if you are worried about leaking).  Rubbing Alcohol will never freeze solid, it will always be flexible. Water will freeze, when mixed together it has a gel type texture.  It will mold to the shape of the face.  This product is so inexpensive you give your clients another one to take home for later use.

Provide you clients with an Aftercare Kit. 

1. Aftercare instructions (you should go over with your client before leaving salon)
2. A & D Ointment (teach them the importance of keeping their new permanent makeup procedure moist with ointment.
3. Gel Eye Pads (If eyes are irritated this is a very soothing and helps reduce any swelling from the procedure).
4. Chamomile Tea bags at home the client can steep the tea bags, let the tea bags cool down, lay on the eyes or lips to heal and soothe.  (Plus they can enjoy a cup of tea while relaxing).
5. Business card (you want to make sure your client has your contact information).
6. Coupon for a discount on a future procedure or for referring a friend, etc. 
7. Decorative bag to hold items to take home.

You have Questions, We have Answers “Topical Anesthetic”

          

A topical anesthetic is a local anesthetic that is used to numb the surface of a body part. They can be used to numb any area of the skin as well as the front of the eyeball, the inside of the nose, ear or throat, the anus and the genital area. Topical anesthetics are available in creams, ointments, aerosols, sprays, lotions, and jellies. Examples include benzocaine, butamben, dibucaine, lidocaine, oxybuprocaine, pramoxine, proparacaine, proxymetacaine, and tetracaine(also named amethocaine).

Topical anesthetics are used to relieve pain and itching caused by conditions such as sunburn or other minor burns, insect bites or stings, poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, and minor cuts and scratches  Also commonly used for permanent makeup procedures, waxing, and laser treatments.  From Wikipedia

There are two different types of Topical Anesthetic. 
1. For “Intact” skin (skin that has not been opened up)
2. For “Open” skin (skin you have started to work on)

Topical Anesthetic is commonly used while preforming a Permanent Makeup procedures.  Always follow directions provided with the product.  

Topical is a bit expensive, so you don’t want to waste any.  Start with a drop of topical into a small pigment cup and apply it with a micro-applicator like the one pictured above.  Micro-applicators are better than applying with a Q-tip because to much of the topical soaks into the cotton bud, which means lost topical  is  thrown away into the trash.  Micro-applicators are a very small sponge tipped tool that holds enough topical to apply to the skin without wasting.  Use one Micro-applicator through out the whole procedure.  They are especially useful getting the topical into very small areas such as between eyelashes for your eyeliner procedures. Let the topical remain on the skin for 10 to 15 minutes.  Once you have started the procedure you can reapply is necessary any time during this service. 

Using it near the eyes: Today there are topical anesthetics that are PH balanced.  Examples that we carry are Zone 1 or Microcaine.    This means using around the eye area it will not sting or cause tearing.  Should still used with caution, but you will find far less problems with having a PH balanced topical for use near the eyes.  You should always have Saline on hand to rinse eyes if needed.

Begin with a gentle implantation with your needles.  Start with a gentle movement, your client will feel more comfortable with less irritation to the skin.  After you have opened the skin up, you can reapply topical to help numb even more.   If you are working on the eyeliner, don’t start your implant in the corners of the eyes.  This is a most sensitive area.  The client may jerk away and you will spend the next hour trying to get her relax and provide a good service, and she will be fighting you and tearing up.  So gently start inward about 1/2 inch, get her use to it, then you will be able to move towards the outside corner without any discomfort.

Stretching the skin for a better permanent makeup result.

We get questions from technicians already in the business or new in the business. 

Why won’t the skin accept the color better?
Why doesn’t my color stay?  
How can I reduce the pain my customer is feeling? 
Why do I have to do so many touch-ups?  

Many of them are not aware of the importance of stretching the skin to produce a good pigment implant.   

• Stretching skin
  1) Easier implant.  Hold your thumb and fore finger 1 inch apart.  Keep your stretching fingers relatively close together, this will ensure a  “tight like a drum” stretch.  The skin between your fingers will look a little whiter plus the skin will feel taught not loose and bouncy under your needle point, this is how you know you have a good stretch.  Why is this important? The stretch will hold open the hole the needle has made in the skin, allowing pigment to flow into this hole.  When finished implanting let go of your stretch and this lets the skin close the hole you made with the needles trapping the pigment color into the skin.  Without the a good stretch, what you thought was implanted pigment ends up as pigment and blood just laying on top of the skin and not much trapped into the skin.  At the time it may look like it is implanted but when the skin heals most of what you thought was implanted pigment is lost.  This is because it really wasn’t implanted properly in the first place.  Touch ups will be necessary, and you won’t have a clue why this happened.
  
  2) 40% less pain for the client.  When you have a tight proper stretch on the skin.  This can reduce the pain factor by 40%.  Proper stretching technique described above and a effective topical anesthetic you will find a happy and comfortable client, she may even fall asleep while have her service done.
  
  3) Little or no touch-ups.  When the proper stretch is used during your procedure. You will find your client has better retention of pigment.  Think of the skin like a balloon.  Poke a hole with a pin into a uninflated balloon.  You can not see the whole, but if you stretch the balloon the hole now becomes visable.  Let go of the stretch on the balloon and the hole disappears.  This is the same theory when implanting pigment into the skin.  Stretching the skin will open up the hole made by the needle so the pigment can flow in.  Let go and it will close trapping the implanted pigment. If you understand the basics of how and why to get color into the skin, touch ups will be a thing of the past.
  
  

Think about the mechanics of this procedure, it suddenly becomes easy to understand.  Practice your stretch, find the stretch that right and works well for you.  Keeping your stretch short and controlled and you and your clients will be very happy with the results.
